EPD Registration for Coated Aluminum Coil: What It Is and What It States.
An environmental product declaration is a verified document of life-cycle information about a product. It is easy to over-read, so this post sets out what an EPD is, what it contains by design, and what Orbit's registration states.
Key takeaways
- An EPD reports quantified life-cycle information for a product under set rules. It is not a pass or fail label and does not rate one product above another.
- ISO 14025 sets the principles and requirements for EPD programs and declarations. Product category rules (PCR) define how a product group is assessed and reported.
- Independent third-party verification checks the declaration against the program rules and the PCR.
- Orbit holds registered EPD EPD-IES-0022694:001 in the International EPD System, an environmental product declaration for coated aluminum coil, developed per ISO 14025 and PCR 2019:14 and independently third-party verified. The certificate is dated August 13, 2026 and is valid until August 10, 2031.
- This post states no impact figures. Any figures belong to the declaration itself.
What is an environmental product declaration?
An EPD presents quantified environmental information on the life cycle of a product under agreed rules. The International EPD System describes an EPD as a verified and registered document that communicates transparent and comparable information about the life-cycle environmental impact of products.
The key word is declaration. An EPD reports data under agreed rules. It does not award a pass or a fail, and it does not say that one product is better than another.
What does ISO 14025 contribute?
ISO 14025 sets the principles and requirements for environmental statements and programs for products, which in practice means EPDs. Its 2026 edition replaced the 2006 edition, which called these documents Type III environmental declarations, and the Type I, II and III terminology is no longer used. Orbit's registration cites ISO 14025 without an edition year, and this post does the same.
In the International EPD System, an EPD rests on a life cycle assessment under ISO 14040 and ISO 14044, carried out under product category rules, then verified and registered. A reader who knows that frame knows where to look. The ISO catalog entry is linked in the references below.
What are product category rules, and why do they matter?
Product category rules (PCR) are the rules for a product group: how the life cycle assessment is carried out and how the results are reported. The International EPD System publishes its PCRs in a library, and an EPD follows a PCR from that library.
A declaration should be read with its PCR beside it. Before relying on one, check the declared unit, the system boundary, the PCR, the validity dates, and whether the declared product matches what you are buying. Two declarations should be compared only when they follow the same rules and describe the same function. Orbit's registration cites PCR 2019:14, the International EPD System's rules for construction products.
What does third-party verification add?
An independent check. Verification is carried out by an outside verifier, not by the program operator or the manufacturer. The verifier reviews the declaration against the program's general instructions and a valid PCR, and documents the review in a verification report.
Verification confirms that the declaration follows the rules. It does not rank the product, and the International EPD System notes that holding an EPD does not by itself imply an environmental advantage for the product.
What does Orbit's registration state?
Orbit's registration states the following, and this post states nothing beyond it:
- Program: International EPD System
- Registration number: EPD-IES-0022694:001
- Declaration: an environmental product declaration for coated aluminum coil
- Developed per ISO 14025 and PCR 2019:14
- Independently third-party verified
- Certificate dated August 13, 2026, valid until August 10, 2031
The declared unit, system boundary and results are part of the declaration document itself. The registration certificate is linked from Orbit's sustainability page.
What does an EPD not tell a buyer?
It is not a pass or fail label. It does not replace the per-order recycled-content figure: Orbit confirms recycled content per order, calculated on the substrate at cast-batch level and traceable to the cast batch, as explained in what recycled-content aluminum coil actually means. And it does not by itself earn a buyer a certification or a credit. How a declaration is used in a buyer's own reporting is the buyer's decision, and any claim built on it is the buyer's to make.
The separate frameworks buyers face are covered in the post on CBAM and Scope 3 reporting. An EPD is a different document from either.
How do I ask for the declaration with a quote?
Say that you need it, name the product you are buying, and ask whether the declaration applies to it. Orbit confirms that against your specification. Tell us which reporting framework the document will feed so the right documentation is identified at the start, and keep the recycled-content request separate, since that figure is confirmed per order.

Common questions
Does Orbit hold an EPD?
Yes. Registration EPD-IES-0022694:001 in the International EPD System, an environmental product declaration for coated aluminum coil, developed per ISO 14025 and PCR 2019:14 and independently third-party verified. The certificate is dated August 13, 2026 and is valid until August 10, 2031.
Is an EPD a certification?
It is a verified declaration, not a certification that a product meets a threshold. Orbit's confirmed certifications are ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001.
Is the EPD the same as a recycled-content figure?
No. The EPD is a separate document and does not replace the recycled-content figure, which Orbit confirms per order, calculated on the substrate at cast-batch level and traceable to the cast batch.
Can I use the EPD in my own reporting?
How a declaration is used in your reporting is your decision, and any credits or certifications built on it remain yours to claim. Tell us the framework you report under and we will confirm what documentation Orbit can provide.
Where can I find the registration certificate?
It is linked from Orbit's sustainability page.
